STEP 1 - CHECK THE SIZE

If the chip is smaller than a 10p coin (approx. 25mm) and not directly in the driver’s line of vision, it can usually be repaired. If it’s larger, a replacement is normally required.

STEP 2 - IDENTIFY THE LOCATION

The driver’s “A-zone” (direct line of vision, about 290mm wide centred on the steering wheel) has stricter limits. In this area, the chip must be smaller than 10mm to pass MOT and be safely repaired.

STEP 3 - CHECK FOR CRACKS

A simple stone chip (small crater or star shape) is usually repairable. If the damage has turned into a long crack (over 40mm), it cannot be repaired and the windscreen will need replacement.

STEP 4 - HOW MANY CHIPS ARE THERE?

One or two isolated chips may be repairable. Multiple chips close together weaken the glass and usually mean replacement is the safer option.

STEP 5 - WHAT POSITION IS THE DAMAGE

Chips close to the edge of the windscreen are harder to repair as they can spread more easily. If within 25mm of the edge, replacement is often recommended.

STEP 6 - MOT & SAFETY

Any chip or crack that obscures the driver’s view or fails MOT visibility standards (10mm in A-zone, 40mm elsewhere) must be dealt with. Repair is only acceptable if it restores full visibility and strength.

STEP 7 - SEEK PROFESSIONAL ASSESSMENT

Even if the chip seems repairable, a trained technician will confirm using specialist tools and resins. If the chip is too deep, dirty, or has moisture inside, repair may not be possible.
